At VANA Ministries, we are privileged to witness the incredible resilience and determination of the children we support. One of these inspiring children is Chris, whose journey has been marked by significant challenges, but also by triumphs that showcase the power of perseverance and community support.
Facing adversity at home
Chris's journey has been far from easy. Growing up, her family believed that she should forgo her education to work at a local tuckshop, contributing to the household income. Despite her evident love for learning and her eagerness to attend school, she was often pulled out of her studies to work—a heartbreaking situation for any child with dreams of a brighter future.
At VANA Ministries, we knew that Chris's potential was too great to let go unrealised. We intervened multiple times, advocating fiercely for her right to stay in school. Education is a vital tool for breaking the cycle of poverty, and we were determined to keep her on the path to a better future.
Her passion for learning quickly shone through, and she thrived academically. But it wasn’t just her academic abilities that stood out—Chris also discovered a passion for sports.
A new chapter
Chris’s talent on the sporting field quickly garnered attention, and she was selected to play in a National Tournament.
This was a remarkable achievement that brought with it new experiences and opportunities. For Chris, who had been at the brink of losing her education, this opportunity was life-changing.
The National Tournament allowed her to experience the thrill of competition, the camaraderie of teammates, and the pride of representing her school on a national level. It was an experience that many of the children in our program have not yet had, and it broadened her horizons in ways that went beyond the classroom.
